5/22 MOOD BOARD MONDAY- A Cozy Breakfast Nook
Happy Mood Board Monday! Today I’m designing one of my favorite things to add in any home design… a breakfast nook! While a formal dining room is great, there’s just something special about a custom, cozy nook for more casual meals. I styled many breakfast nooks while working on HGTV and Magnolia Network’s show, Bargain Mansions. These intimate dining areas were a staple in most of the homes seen in the show. You don’t need an intricate, custom-built banquette, or a lot of space to achieve a breakfast nook. The basic necessities are a blank wall, a rounded or rectangular table, some comfy bench seating, and a few dining chairs. Add in some accessories and you’re set. Keep reading to hear how I styled this particular nook and get the links to shop!
To set the scene, I would recommend wallpapering whatever wall that you’re placing the breakfast nook in. I chose this coral straw jute grasscloth pattern. This specific wallpaper is available to the trade only, and can be purchased through me. For the banquette, I opted for this upholstered bench from Amazon rather than something custom built. I loved the simplicity of the neutral colors while adding a fun pop of stripes. No breakfast nook is complete without a statement light! I found this bronze, five light chandelier with shades and thought it’d be perfect for this space.
I chose a wood rounded dining table over a rectangular one. I think rounded tables offer easier conversation, and a more intimate feel for dining. I’d do three french bistro chairs in a tan and white color palette. French bistro style chairs are a classic selection and add some great texture to this space.
For some wall decor I fell in love with this scalloped wood mirror. This will help open up the space, as mirrors make rooms appear larger. I’d then flank the mirror on either side with a fun food-inspired print, such as these citrus art prints. I’d frame them in these bamboo frames with a mahogany finish.
Lastly, a breakfast nook needs some cozy pillows! I would layer two pillows, one being a square pillow, and one a lumbar pillow. This aqua and green chinoiserie pillow is a nice contrast to the orange wallpaper. I’d then add a fun needlepoint pillow with this cute saying in front.
